Djanogly City Academy launches new student wellbeing project in city first
Djanogly City Academy is the first school in the city to launch a new project that supports the wellbeing of its sixth formers.
Djanogly City Academy Sixth Form, on Sherwood Rise, has recruited a wellbeing professional funded by the mdeducational foundation charity.
The charity provides schools across the UK and Ireland with the opportunity to receive salary funding for the placement of a wellbeing professional to support their post-16 students.
Alongside recruiting a Wellbeing Lead, Djanogly City Academy Sixth Form has opened a Wellbeing Hub for students.
The hub offers a calm and quiet space, equipped with comfy chairs and bean bags, where students can work or relax.
A hub programme to boost wellbeing has also been created offering cultural activities as well as practical advice and tips on self awareness and mind management skills.
To mark the launch of the new project, sixth formers as well as education and civic chiefs attended an official opening on 24th September 2024 where guests had a tour of the facility.
Andy Smith, Principal, Djanogly City Academy, said: “It is vital that we support our students with their mental health, wellbeing and resilience given the profound impact that it can have on education, relationships and future success in life.”
Mark Mallender, Chief Executive Officer, Djanogly Learning Trust, added: “We are delighted to have received mdeducational foundation funding. Recruiting a dedicated wellbeing professional will enable our students to develop the awareness and skills to support their mental health.”
Councillor Carole McCulloch, Lord Mayor of Nottingham, who attended the launch, said: "Young people today face a wide range of pressures which can have devastating consequences for their mental health. It is very encouraging to see this new initiative, which is a first for the city, providing a safe space where young people can learn more about wellbeing and access support if they need to."
Deirdre Doherty, Director of Schools and Partnerships, mdeducational foundation, said: “With thousands of students already supported, mdeducational foundation has continued the journey towards our vision which is a world in which every student has access to the wellbeing support that they need, without delay. We are absolutely delighted that Djanogly City Academy, Nottingham, is one of our first schools here in England to have received our support.”
Djanogly City Academy, which is Ofsted graded ‘good’, is part of Djanogly Learning Trust, and has more than 1,200 scholars aged 11 to 18 years-old based at two sites on Sherwood Rise and Gregory Boulevard.
Around 160 students attend Djanogly City Academy Sixth Form, which offers 20 A Level subjects and opened in September 2022.
